About our Kayak School
Since 2012 Canterbury Kayaking has been the industry leader in multisport kayak instruction. We are a relatively new organisation, with a vision to provide you with a more effective way to reach your goals than has ever been offered before.
Ask around about us. We have built an excellent reputation both here in New Zealand and overseas. Our instructors are among the most qualified in the country, and our modern teaching methods are specifically designed to help you reach your full potential. If training with the best coaching available is important to you, we’d like to invite you to paddle with us this summer.
What You’ll Experience with us…
Train for the Kathmandu Coast to Coast Race
We have a great relationship with the Kathmandu Coast to Coast. Every year we work with a large number of first-time competitors from all around New Zealand, as well as overseas. Our team is made up of full-time paddlers and kayak instructors. We admit, this means we don’t know very much about running and cycling! However, we know kayaking better than anyone around, and because our coaches don’t often race, we can focus all our efforts on your success. We are now proud to be New Zealand’s most popular and most trusted C2C kayak training provider.
Get maximum improvements for your time.
All our courses are four days long to provide you the maximum benefit in skills for the minimum amount of time invested. We never break our courses up over weekends. We always run our programs as four days in a row (usually Thursday to Sunday). This is so you can keep improving each day, and never feel like you’re going backwards.
We’ll focus on teaching you to roll.
Being able to roll your kayak back up is an essential safety skill that all kayakers can learn. Not all courses in New Zealand teach rolling effectively, and for a long time Canterbury Kayaking was the only Grade 2 Certificate provider to teach this skill at all. Our expert coaches provide quality rolling instruction during all our programs.
Get professional coaching from a qualified instructor.
Our staff are not just good kayakers or racers, we are professionally trained educators. All Canterbury Kayaking coaches hold the New Zealand Outdoor Instructor Award in Whitewater Kayaking (NZOIA Kayak 1). On top of this, all our coaches also have Degrees or Diplomas in Outdoor Education & Guiding. Teaching kayaking is not just a hobby for us. This is what we do every day, and it’s a job we take very seriously.
Experience real rivers, as safely as possible.
Our safety operating systems are externally audited and monitored by Quality Solutions International, who has awarded us the “Adventure Mark” seal of approval. Leave your worries behind. Focus on developing your skills in a safe environment while enjoying the river with us.
