Tips for Buying Footwear for Kayaking

Select from our range of the best footwear for kayaking.

When making your decision, think about the type of paddling you do and the terrain you're likely to encounter. Some have thick protective soles that are great for whitewater trips and rafting where you need maximum coverage. Other models feature slightly thinner more flexible soles that are ideal for multisport or ocean paddling. Thinner soles will still provide protection and grip on wet rock, and also allow good movement of the rudder pedals.

The upper material the bootie is made from is also important. Neoprene will provide the most warmth without socks and the most flexibility. Composite fibres are generally a bit more hard-wearing and can provide greater ankle support.

Lastly, note the way they secure to your feet. Lace ups offer the most support and adjustability. A velcro strap will be the most reliable and stay on the best when swimming. A side zip will make it very quick to get the shoe on and off.
