Hi Bryan, Thanks for getting in touch. The best best place to start is by booking in our Grade 2 Course for the soonest date you can make it to. In the meantime, some flat water training in a multisport boat over winter will certainly be of great benefit to you - but is not a requirement to attend our Grade 2 Course. There are various clubs around the country you can join to get this flatwater time if you want to get a head-start on things. As for the certification itself, we include a Grade 2 Certificate assessment as part of our Grade 2 Course. Our G2 certificates are approved by Coast to Coast and our programs are designed specifically for this event. If you gain your certificate through us, you will most likely be certified to paddle a multisport boat in the "stable" class (there are three classes of boats: Stable/Intermediate/Elite). So you will be able to choose to race in a range of boats within this class, with advice from your coach if necessary. Because you are doing the Coast to Coast I would also seriously consider doing our Coast to Coast Course soon after your Grade 2 Course. This course will provide you with essential time on the Waimakariri River in whichever multisport boat you end up with. Hope that all makes sense. You are more than welcome to go ahead and book your Grade 2 Course with us now via our website, as spaces tend to fill quickly. I'm looking forward to paddling with you soon, Coach Sam.
